Square Welded Wire Mesh

What is square welded wire mesh?

Square welded wire mesh is light steel wire electrically welded into even square openings and sold in rolls that are easy to carry and cut. The welds keep every opening square, so it does not shift or sag like woven mesh. In Thailand it is often called chicken wire mesh, though it does far more than poultry cages.

Types of square mesh

• Galvanized is the economical all-rounder for indoor and outdoor use; hot-dip galvanized rolls carry a thicker zinc layer and last longer outdoors.
• PVC coated has a smooth plastic skin that is kind to hands and animals and resists damp, good for aviaries, pet cages and garden fences.
• Stainless steel gives the best rust resistance for coastal, wet or chemical environments.
• Heavy gauge No.14-16 in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 in openings for dog runs, animal pens and fencing.

Choosing the opening and wire gauge

The higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire: No.24 is 0.55 mm, No.18 is 1.2 mm. Pick an opening smaller than whatever you need to keep in or out, then a gauge that suits the load.

How to use it as plaster lath

Cut 1/2 in mesh into strips about 15-20 cm wide, fix them over the joints between block walls and columns or beams and around door and window frames, then nail them before plastering. The mesh keys the plaster and cuts down cracking along those joints.
