A collection of stories about the use of building materials that are suitable for construction. Deepen construction secrets for everyone. Know straight to the point
Portland cement, known in Thailand as ปูนแดง ("red cement"), is the structural cement mixed with gravel, sand and water into concrete for columns, beams, slabs, footings and precast work. It is much stronger than masonry cement. Thai structural cement is made to TIS 15 Part 1 (Portland cement) or TIS 2594 (hydraulic cement), and both are suitable for houses and buildings.
TIS 15 defines 5 types of Portland cement, but Types 1, 3 and 5 are the ones sold at retail. Types 2 and 4 are for specialist work such as dams and mass foundations. Many makers now offer hydraulic cement in place of Type 1 for everyday structural work.
Type | Standard | Key property | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
TIS 15 Part 1 | High strength, general use | Columns, beams, slabs, footings, cast pipes and blocks | |
TIS 2594 | Replaces Type 1 for general work, lower carbon | Houses and general buildings | |
TIS 15 Part 1 | Gains strength fast, early formwork removal | Piles, precast planks, prestressed concrete, fast-track jobs | |
TIS 15 Part 1 / pozzolan blends | Resists sulfates and chlorides | Coastal sites, saline soil, brackish water, wastewater tanks |
Portland cement is for load-bearing concrete. Masonry cement (ปูนเขียว) is a weaker blended cement that is smoother and easier to work, made for laying, plastering and light-duty floors. Never substitute it for Portland cement in columns, beams or footings.
A 1:2:4 mix for house columns, beams and slabs uses about 320–350 kg of Portland cement per cubic meter (roughly seven 50 kg bags), with about 0.5–0.6 m³ of sand, 0.8–0.9 m³ of gravel and 160–180 liters of water. For larger structures, use ready-mixed concrete, whose strength is controlled at the plant.
