Skim Coat for a Smooth Wall Before Painting

Skim coat is a fine, ready-mixed thin plaster applied over plastered walls or concrete in a thin layer to fill pinholes, hairline cracks and trowel marks, leaving a smooth surface for paint. Most skim coats come in 20–25 kg bags, in gray or white.

Choosing a skim coat

• Interior or exterior: cement-based skim coats work inside and out; gypsum-based ones are for interiors only because they do not tolerate moisture
• Gray or white: white helps light paint colors cover in fewer coats; gray suits general work
• Acrylic skim coat: ready to use with no mixing, good for small patches and fine cracks

How to apply skim coat

1. Clean off dust and grease, then dampen the wall
2. Mix with water in the ratio on the bag, using a mixing paddle until smooth
3. Apply thin coats with a steel trowel; let the first coat dry before the second
4. Once dry, smooth it with a sanding sponge or sandpaper, then prime before painting
