What is gypsum board, and which one do you need?
Gypsum board (drywall) is a gypsum core faced with paper on both sides, used for ceilings and drywall partitions. The standard size is 120x240 cm gypsum board; 9 mm board is the usual choice for ceilings and 12 mm board for walls. Boards are made to TIS standards in several grades for different rooms.
Types and uses
- standard board for dry rooms, the lowest-cost option
- moisture-resistant board for bathrooms, kitchens and covered eaves, and mold-resistant board for damp spaces
- heat-resistant board with foil or foam backing, for top-floor ceilings
- fire-rated board, sound-rated board and high-impact board for walls with special requirements
- By edge: tapered-edge board for seamless ceilings, square-edge board where joints aren't taped
Benefits
- Light and cut with a utility knife; faster to build than masonry
- Smooth face, ready to paint or wallpaper once the joints are finished
- Non-combustible, with fire-rated grades for fire walls
- Easy to remove and rebuild, ideal for renovations
