Ceiling Access Panels

What sizes do ceiling access panels for skim-coated ceilings come in, and how are they installed?

A skim-coated gypsum ceiling cannot be lifted open like a T-bar ceiling, so access panels are needed wherever pipes, wiring, electrical equipment or air conditioning sit above. Ready-made concealed-frame panels fit 9 mm skim-coat gypsum ceilings and add an opening to an existing ceiling without removing all of it. They come with square or rounded corners (5 cm radius), in a standard type for general rooms and a moisture-resistant type for bathrooms and kitchens.

Opening sizes are 300x300, 450x450, 600x600 and 600x1200 mm (rounded-corner types in 450x450 and 600x600 mm). The frame is about 200 mm larger than the opening, for example a 450x450 mm opening uses a 650x650 mm frame.

• Mark the position on the ceiling framing and add framing around the opening.
• Fix the frame to the framing with screws at no more than 100 mm spacing all round.
• Apply cloth tape, then skim over the joints and screw heads.
• Insert the panel door from below and turn it to seat on the frame.

Ceiling access panels: how to choose

A ceiling access panel is a ready-made opening in a drywall ceiling that lets you inspect and repair wiring, pipes, AC lines and pumps above. The frame and gypsum door sit flush with the ceiling and are finished and painted to blend in. Every drywall ceiling with services above should have at least one.

Sizes and types

• 45x45 and 60x60 cm are the most common openings; some lines also offer 30x30 and 60x120 cm
• Standard for general rooms; moisture-resistant for bathrooms, kitchens or ceilings of moisture-resistant board
• Gyproc ProServe Ultra Slim has a narrow, low-profile frame

Benefits

• Faster and neater than cutting your own opening
• The door opens, so there's no need to break the ceiling for repairs
• Finishes and paints like the rest of the ceiling
• 60x60 cm lets a person climb through; 45x45 cm suits reaching a valve or junction box
