Fire-rated gypsum board: when you need it

Fire-rated gypsum board has a glass-fiber reinforced core. In a fire, the water in the gypsum absorbs heat as it evaporates, and the fibers hold the board together, so walls and ceilings hold back fire longer than standard board. The fire rating comes from the whole wall system, not the board alone.

Uses and thicknesses

• Fire walls, escape routes, stair cores and service shafts
• Plant rooms, electrical rooms, commercial kitchens and shops
• 12-13 mm for general use; 15-16 mm where a longer rating is required
