What is 4 mm cement board used for?

4 mm cement board is the standard thickness for ceilings: indoor ceilings, bathroom ceilings and soffits. It is thin, light and easy to fix to ceiling framing, yet handles moisture and leaks far better than gypsum. It comes in 120x240 cm for jointed ceilings and 60x120 cm for soffits and T-bar grids.

Types and applications

• Flat ceilings: Smart Board 4 mm, SHERA Pro, TPI, DURA One and flat boards from other brands.
• Soffits: capsule and grooved vented soffit boards, and insect-screen vented boards.
• Decorative ceilings: wood-grain and U-grooved panels, and 60x60 cm fiber cement T-bar tiles.

A 4 mm sheet weighs about 15-17 kg at 120x240 cm, so ceilings go up quickly with little load on the roof structure. For soffits in windy locations or a stiffer ceiling, choose 6 mm cement board instead.
