How to choose a cement board or Smart Board ceiling
A cement board ceiling, often called a Smart Board ceiling, uses 3.2-6 mm fiber cement panels fixed to steel furring or a T-bar grid. Unlike gypsum it doesn't swell or crumble when it gets damp, so it works in bathrooms, kitchens and exterior soffits that catch driving rain.
Types and applications
- Flat ceilings: 120x240 or 60x120 cm sheets that can be jointed and painted like a plastered ceiling; 4 mm for most ceilings and 6 mm when you need a stiffer sheet.
- Soffits: vented soffit boards let roof-space heat escape, and insect-screen vented boards add mesh to keep insects and animals out.
- Decorative ceilings: wood-grain and 3-inch grooved panels, and 60x60 cm fiber cement T-bar tiles for damp areas where gypsum T-bar tiles don't hold up.

Better moisture and leak resistance than gypsum, termite proof and non-combustible. The face takes interior and exterior acrylic paint, and with framing at the manufacturer's spacing the ceiling won't sag even in damp areas over the years.
