What is a timing belt?

An industrial timing belt has teeth that mesh with grooved pulleys, so it transmits power without slip and keeps the driver and driven shafts in exact sync. A V-belt relies on friction in the groove instead. That makes timing belts the choice for machines that need precise motion: packaging machines, printers, CNC axes and indexing conveyors.

BANDO timing belt types

Rubber trapezoidal-tooth timing belts in inch pitches: MXL (0.08 in), XL (1/5 in), L (3/8 in), H (1/2 in), XH (7/8 in) and XXH (1-1/4 in), plus double-sided DXL, DL and DH for drives that use both faces of the belt.
STS round-tooth timing belts in metric pitches S3M, S4.5M, S5M, S8M and S14M. The curved tooth carries more load than a trapezoidal tooth of similar size and runs quieter. Double-sided DS8M is also available.
PU timing belts T5 and T10 (5 and 10 mm pitch), steel-reinforced urethane with low stretch and good oil and wear resistance for positioning drives. Double-sided DT5 and DT10 are also available.

How to read a timing belt code

The code gives both the tooth profile and the length. Inch series put the length in tenths of an inch before the code: 210XL is 21.0 in long. MXL is the exception: its number is the tooth count, so 100MXL has 100 teeth and is 8 in long. Metric series put the length in millimeters after the code: S8M 384 is 384 mm and T5-165 is 165 mm. Always replace a belt with the same pitch as the pulleys, because different tooth systems are not interchangeable even when the sizes look close.
