What is flat galvanized sheet?

Flat galvanized steel sheet (SGCC) is plain, uncorrugated steel coated with zinc. The coating keeps rust away without painting, and the sheet bends, cuts and forms easily, which makes it the budget choice for general sheet-metal work.

What is it used for?

Gutters, roof flashing and cover strips
Signs, cabinets and steel boxes
Partition walls, ceilings and general home repair
Ductwork and shop fabrication

Sheet sizes

Standard sizes are 3x8 ft (91 x 244 cm) and 4x8 ft (122 x 244 cm). Thin sheets usually come in 3x8 ft; from 0.5 mm up, most sheets are 4x8 ft.

Gauge and thickness

Gauge 35 is about 0.18 mm. The lower the gauge, the thicker the sheet: gauge 28 is 0.35 mm, gauge 20 is 0.9 mm and gauge 10 is 3.4 mm. Zinc coating is rated in grams per square meter, for example Z06 (60 g/m²) on thin sheets and Z275 (275 g/m²) where longer rust protection is needed.
