What is cement board and which type should you choose?
Cement board is a prefabricated building sheet with cement as its main binder. There are two groups: fiber cement board, made with silica sand and cellulose fiber (Smart Board, SHERA, TPI), and cement bonded particle board, made with wood particles and cement (VIVA Board). Both resist water, termites and fire, so they replace timber and gypsum wherever moisture, sun or rain is a problem.
Types and applications
- By use: cement board ceilings 3.2-6 mm, fiber cement walls 6-12 mm and cement board flooring 15-25 mm.
- By finish: flat sheets for jointed, painted work, grooved boards and wood-grain cement board for decorative work, and vented soffit boards for eaves.
- By brand: Smart Board, SHERA Board, VIVA Board and TPI Board, plus DURA One, Diamond, Olarn and Hahuang.
