Clay Brick is commonly used for the wall that needs water protection. The good clay bricks must have standard size, which will be more efficient for layering. 

What are the standard sizes of clay brick?

Under the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) standard, clay brick measures 5 cm thick, 9.5 cm wide and 20 cm long, with compressive strength of at least 20 kg/sq.cm and water absorption of no more than 30%. Common sizes are listed below.

How do you lay clay brick without cracking the wall?

• Soak the bricks until saturated and let the surface dry to damp before laying, so they do not draw water out of the mortar.
• Start from the corners and stretch string lines both horizontally and vertically.
• Keep the mortar joint 1–2 cm thick.
• Embed 6 mm tie bars about 40–50 cm long in the columns, spaced about 30–40 cm apart.
• Add tie columns and lintel beams around door and window openings, and where a wall is wider than 3–4 m or taller than 3 m.
• Near the underside of the beam, leave a 10–20 cm gap for about 3–5 days so the wall and beam settle before closing it.
