Questions
What wood is formwork timber made of, what sizes, and how is it protected from pests?
Formwork timber is used for concrete moulds and temporary structures. It is usually softwood such as krabak, commonly 1x6 inch or 1x8 inch. Finger-jointed timber that does not twist or bow gives straight concrete surfaces and reduces plastering work.
Timber can be protected in two ways.
- Pressure treatment (Full Cell Process): air is removed by vacuum, then preservative is forced in at 7-13 kg/sq.cm. for 2-3 hours so it penetrates evenly.
- Brushing or spraying: simple and cheap. Apply at least twice on dried timber. Penetration is shallow.
