Types of wood doors
Wood doors fall into two groups: solid timber doors that are strong and quiet, and plywood or engineered doors that are lighter and more affordable. The right choice depends on where the door goes and your budget.
Solid wood doors
- Teak doors: the most durable, beautiful grain, termite-resistant
- Red meranti doors: attractive and more affordable than teak
- Hardwood doors / redwood doors: strong, ideal for front doors
- Pine doors: lightweight, for interiors
Plywood and engineered doors
HDF plywood doors take crisp paneled and grooved profiles, melamine doors come pre-finished in wood grain, and MDF doors have a smooth, paintable face. All suit interior doors away from water; for bathrooms choose bathroom doors in waterproof materials instead.
Solid wood vs plywood doors
Solid wood doors are heavier, stronger, quieter and can be sanded and refinished. HDF and melamine doors are lighter, less prone to warping and several times cheaper, a good fit when you need many interior doors on a budget.
