What is steel billet, and what is it used to make?

Steel billet is a long steel bar with a square cross-section of about 90-160 mm, mostly 5-9 m long. It is a semi-finished product that rolling mills roll further into long products such as round bar, deformed bar and wire rod. Standard sizes are 100x100, 120x120 and 150x150 mm, 6-12 m long.

It is made by melting scrap in an electric induction furnace (EIF), adjusting the mix, such as carbon, silicon and manganese, to the required grade, then casting it into bars. Rolling mills then roll it into long products used in general construction such as houses and shophouses, and in large works such as bridges, dams and high-rise buildings. Billet price is the main raw-material cost that affects domestic steel prices.
