Which light wall stud size suits which wall height?
Metal studs for gypsum partition walls are made from hot-dip galvanized steel to TIS 863-2532, folded into C and U sections. They come in two thicknesses, 0.52 mm (No. 24) and 0.40 mm (No. 26), with the same section sizes. The recommended wall height without noggings is based on a single layer of standard 12 mm gypsum board.
C stud size (mm) | Total wall thickness, 12 mm board (mm) | Total wall thickness, 15 mm board (mm) | Recommended height (m) |
|---|---|---|---|
50 | 76 | 82 | 2.7 |
64 | 90 | 96 | 3.2 |
74 | 100 | 106 | 3.7 |
92 | 118 | 124 | 4.2 |
Rust resistance depends on the zinc coating. Studs meeting TIS standards use a 220 g/sq.m. coating (Z22), while some cheap studs have only 120-180 g/sq.m. Proper testing needs a laboratory, but a simple comparison is to soak studs in salt water and see how long rust takes to appear.
