What is the difference between laminated and plain bridge bearing pads?
Bridge bearing pads are made from natural rubber or synthetic rubber (polychloroprene/neoprene) to TIS 951-2533, AASHTO and BS 5400. There are two main types.
- Laminated (steel-reinforced): steel plates are embedded in the rubber in layers, from 1 to 5 or more, spaced 8 or 10 mm apart. The plates are 3.2 mm thick ASTM A570 Grade 36, and the pad carries load and movement well.
- Plain: no steel reinforcement, rubber 10–30 mm thick, suited to uneven beam and pier surfaces. Hardness can be specified from 50±5 to 70±5.
Common sizes are 10, 20 and 25 mm thick, 100–500 mm wide and 1,000 mm long. Bridges are designed for a service life of at least 50 years, so the bearing material should be durable enough to match.
