How to choose an AAC block trowel

An AAC block trowel, or notched trowel, has a toothed edge that spreads thin-bed mortar in even ridges across the whole face of the block. Because AAC blocks are laid with a thin bed, a plain trowel leaves the joint uneven, the wall out of line and mortar wasted. The rule is to use a trowel as wide as the block is thick.

Types of trowels

  • 7.5 and 10 cm notched trowels for 7.5 cm and 10 cm blocks, the usual house walls.
  • 12.5, 15, 17.5 and 20 cm notched trowels for thick walls such as 15 cm and 20 cm blocks.
  • Comb trowel to plane the top of each course level before laying the next.
  • Sanding trowel to smooth the wall face before plastering or tiling.

Even ridges give full bond across the block, a plumb and level wall and less mortar, and the thin joint insulates better than the thick sand-cement joints used with clay brick.
