Door Seals & Weather Stripping: Close the Gaps Around the Frame

Door seals are rubber or silicone strips fitted around the door frame or sash to close the gaps that remain when a door or window shuts. They block drafts, dust, insects, rain and outside noise, keep air-conditioning in and soften the door as it closes, an inexpensive way to make every door shut tighter.

Types of door seals

  • Self-adhesive D, E, I and P profile seals, chosen by the width of the gap between door and frame
  • Silicone door seals: clear strips for the bottom or side edges that won't hide the door color
  • Glass door seals: clear rubber profiles for frameless glass and shower doors

Benefits and how to choose

Close the door and measure the gap between door and frame first: narrow gaps of about 2-4 mm suit I or E profiles, wider 5-6 mm gaps suit P or D profiles. Clean and dry the frame before fitting so the adhesive holds. A good seal stays flexible, resists sun and humidity and won't turn brittle with age. To seal under the door as well, pair it with a door sweep.
