What is a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker is an automatic electrical switch designed to protect a circuit from damage caused by overcurrent, short circuit, or earth leakage. Unlike a fuse, a breaker can be reset and reused after it trips. Every electrical installation in a home, office, or factory relies on circuit breakers as the first line of protection for wiring, equipment, and people.

Types of circuit breakers

1. MCB — Miniature Circuit Breaker

Compact branch breakers rated 6–125A, used in residential consumer units to protect individual circuits against overload and short circuit.

2. MCCB — Molded Case Circuit Breaker

Higher capacity (16–1,600A) breakers for commercial buildings, factories, and 3-phase main panels.

3. RCBO / RCCB — Residual Current Devices

Breakers that trip on earth leakage to prevent electric shock. Required for wet areas (bathrooms, water heaters). RCBO combines overcurrent + earth leakage protection in one unit; RCCB handles earth leakage only.

4. ACB — Air Circuit Breaker

Large breakers rated 630–6,300A for industrial low-voltage distribution.

How to size a circuit breaker

  • Small residential (5(15)A meter) — 30–50A main breaker
  • Medium residential (15(45)A meter) — 63A main, 16–32A branches
  • Large / 3-phase residential (30(100)A meter) — 100A 3P main breaker
  • Factory / commercial — MCCB or ACB sized to calculated load

Quick rule: sum the wattage of all loads, divide by 220V (single phase) or 380V (3-phase), then choose the next standard breaker rating roughly 1.25× the calculated current.

Top circuit breaker brands

  • Schneider Electric — French global brand. Easy9, Acti9, Domae ranges.
  • ABB — Industrial-grade quality. SH200, S200, Tmax ranges.
  • Mitsubishi — Japanese industrial breakers. BH-D, NF ranges.
  • Panasonic — Value-priced residential breakers and consumer units.
  • Haco / Safe-T-Cut — Thai brands, TIS-certified, budget-friendly.
  • Square D — American-engineered, heavy duty.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a breaker and a safety cut?

A “safety cut” in Thai usage refers to an RCBO/RCCB earth-leakage breaker that prevents shock. A standard MCB only trips on overload or short circuit. For full protection, install both.

What can a single breaker power?

Depends on amperage — 16A for standard outlets, 20–32A for air conditioners and water heaters, 32–50A for electric stoves and high-draw appliances.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Common causes: overload, short-circuited appliance, damaged wiring, or aged breaker. Have an electrician inspect your panel every 3–5 years.
